Goole Town surprised United when they took an early lead when Paul Showler netted at the far post after ten minutes from a chance set up by old adversary Terry Curran. In a quick response Bob Taylor had a header kicked off the line by former Leeds United Junior, Richard Annan, who had joined Goole from Doncaster Rovers in the summer. Jack Ashurst replaced Vince Brockie at Right Back at Half-Time. Four minutes into the second half United equalized when Bob Taylor turned a low cross from the right from Peter Mumby into the net. Simon Grayson replaced Peter Haddock at Right Half after fifty-nine minutes. In the sixty-sixth minute Peter Swan got the winner with a fine solo effort in which he beat several defenders with a run from the deep which started just inside the Goole half. Darren Edmonds replaced Kevin Noteman at Outside Left after seventy-three minutes. Goalkeeper Neil Edwards remained unused on the Leeds bench.
